I can from a small high school where most people stayed in state to continue with their education or future. I knew that I wanted to dance outside of college, but was not sold on coming to Radford. My family had just gone through a lot of trauma with death and my mothers stroke, and I was unsure if I could make the transition to college knowing that my family was going through so much. Once I visited Radford University I fell in love with its close-knit atmosphere and the friendly environment that the town set up.
I came in as a double major in Dance and Biology, and it wasn't until my Junior year that I decided to switch over to Biology instead of Sports Medicine. I had gone through multiple wrist surgeries and I was unsure whether or not I could handle the physicality of Sports Medicine. but knew that I wanted to keep exploring the fields of physiology and kinesiology. Because I transferred late in my track, I had to complete a Biology degree in two years. I was able to overload and get all the classes I needed in order to graduate and was able to take on a research project(explained more in the "Biology" tab).
Through the switch in majors, I was also still able to continue strong with my Dance degree. The Department of Dance gave me experiences beyond what I would have ever imagined. From collaborating with local colleges to traveling across the states, I was able to explore dance in a wide and amazing frame. The department gave me the opportunity to perform and to grow as a technician and scholar in the world of dance.
I learned that through this process, no matter what field of study I was in, Radford University prepared me well. Each professor was an expert in his or her field and each professor cared about the well-being of the students and about the knowledge that they wanted to pass on to their classes. I wasn't just pushed to reach the campus, but I was also pushed to go outside and explore the New River Valley. The reason was Radford, because it gave me the resources to explore my passions and receive the knowledge that I was so desperately wanting to receive.
